Paying respect to National Deaf History Month and celebrating the beauty within the deaf and hard of hearing communities, New York-based genderless streetwear brand PRIVATE POLICY collaborates with activist, artist, and actor Chella Man to turn his distinctive artwork into ear jewelry designs highlighting the beauty of being deaf.
Launching March 15, 2021, 50% of the profit from pre-ordering will go to the Deaf QueerResource Center, available as limited edition. The campaign video is videographed under water with a full BIPOC deaf community cast wearing the jewelry and using sign language to read a poem, the result is an emotional, breathtaking, and powerful film. This capsule collection has turned Chella’s dream into a reality.
“Ever since I was a kid, I had never felt comfortable with the hardware behind my ears because it has always been designed by others and never by me. It never felt or looked like me,” says Chella Man. “Oftentimes, until this day, working as a model, there were shoots in which stylists and photographers have tried to avoid getting my cochlear implants into images rather than accepting them as part of me and amplifying them.”
