Paying respect to National Deaf History Month and celebrating the beauty within the deaf and hard of hearing communities, 50% of the profit from pre-ordering will go to the Deaf Queer Resource Center

What is the inspiration?

"The Arrow & Sun" is an art piece combination designed for one's left ear. Its intricate lines are drawn from Chella Man's distinctive abstract painting aesthetics. And the bold "The Sun" shape compliments the delicate line art piece perfectly.  This wearable 3D art piece aims to highlight the beauty of being deaf.

“The hope is for individuals within the deaf and hard of hearing communities to celebrate their own unique beauty and not be identified by a device they wear. With this jewelry collection, we also designed for friends of our communities in mind, as we hope they will also love the pieces and wear them with pride and show solidarity,” says Chella.

What is it made of?

"The Arrow & Sun" wearable art piece is made of Gold plated metal. The complex and abstract shapes require careful handcrafting and each piece is different because of the handmade element.  The unique bold shape requires careful hand polishing for the mirror-like finish.

Private Policy creative directors Siying Qu and Haoran Li say, “We are so thrilled to be working with Chella on this collaboration. It has always been our mission to design with a purpose and this partnership is no different. We were able to talk with Chella and understand his frustration for wearing a device that doesn’t truly represent himself. We were able to design and create pieces using his artwork that we hope will resonate with the deaf and hard of hearing communities. It’s our hope they can put on an accessory that compliments the hardware they are currently using, and proudly display them.”

How is the fit like?

"The Arrow" is slightly bendable, to fit one's unique ear shape. Once gently fitted, it should be securely worn on one's left ear and comfortably pair with most hearing aid devices. Please test the fit by moving your head left to right, up and down to ensure it is fitted correctly.

"The Sun"  is in a rigid form and sits on one's left ear like a crown. It can be comfortably paired with most hearing aid devices. It is like an ear cuff, not tightly fitted, and not meant for big movements.

Anyone is welcome to wear this piece  in respect for the Deaf / hard of hearing community!

Including those, of course, those who do not wear cochlear implants or hearing aids!

“Ever since I was a kid, I had never felt comfortable with the hardware behind my ears because it has always been designed by others and never by me. It never felt or looked like me,” says Chella Man. “Oftentimes, until this day, working as a model, there were shoots in which stylists and photographers have tried to avoid getting my cochlear implants into images rather than accepting them as part of me and amplifying them.”
